Leadership Credentials

Don T. Chavis, Founder

When a chaplaincy office, an association, or an owner considers bringing Beside the Work to their people, the first fair question is about the leadership and stewardship that keep the table. This page is the answer to that question: the leadership record, marketplace and ministry side by side — told as a working life rather than a résumé.

The short version is this. For thirty years our leadership has held the jobs this consultancy serves — night shifts, warehouses, trucks, retail floors, service routes. The ministry did not arrive at the working man's door from outside. It grew up inside the work.

In the marketplace

The marketplace half of this record reads less like a résumé and more like a working life. It began on retail floors and delivery trucks, where the discipline was simple: keep your word to the customer and keep your crew safe. It moved into warehouses and night shifts, where whole operations had to run end to end — people, safety, accuracy, output — and where receiving and routing disciplines built from scratch had to hold up under pressure, because there was nothing behind them if they didn't.

It grew into service territories, where the measure changed from one building to many: crews staffed, routes covered, fleets maintained, clients kept year after year. And it matured into ownership — businesses built from nothing, grown to profitability, and sold well — with profit-and-loss accountability carried without interruption across three decades.

Along the way, two habits set in and never left. The first: build training that outlives its author — programs adopted organization-wide, people developed into leaders rather than managed by discipline. The second: do the work at the door — relationship-first field work, proven at scale, the very method this consultancy's cohort work is built on.

What this record means at the table

Beside the Work runs on a tentmaking model: the marketplace funds the ministry, so the ministry never has to be funded by the men it serves. That is not a slogan on this page — it is the shape of the record above.

The Table-Keeper's credential is proximity. Our leadership has been the second-shift man, the driver, the warehouse supervisor, the small-business owner watching payroll. When a practitioner sits down at the table, he is not sitting across from a theory.

Like Precious Faith takes its name from 2 Peter 1:1 — the faith obtained by an apostle and the faith obtained by a working man stand on equal footing. That is the whole premise of the work.
